Freckles Gradient Mesh by frankwyte81 Freckles Gradient Mesh by frankwyte81
Follow Me On: Facebook Youtube Twitter

Update: I created a Youtube video showing my layers one by one for this artwork. You can find it here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejDQcp…

When I started this mesh, I wanted to create realistic skin textures on my gradient mesh work. I wanted to see how far I could push the mesh tool. I wanted to achieve photorealism like I had never done before. I'm happy how it turned out, but I might never push the mesh this far again without someone writing a check for the work. This gradient mesh vector was completed over a three week period. This gradient mesh was done without using the mesh tormentor.

Time: I stop counting after 100+ hours...

Illustrator CS6, gradient mesh tool, a vector hair brush, square tool, and nothing else

As a more traditional artist without the technical knowledge of Gradient mesh techniques, could you tell me, do you work over the original photo or from the original photo? This is definitely the most photo realistic piece of work I've ever seen. Brilliant!

That's awesome. I appreciate the publicity. I also have two Youtube videos featuring this piece. 1) Create realistic Skin Textures with the Gradient Mesh: [link] 2) Showing the layers for the "Freckles" piece: [link]

Amazing! I haven't had much experience using the gradient mesh tool, but your work and YouTube videos have inspired me to seriously sit down and learn how to use it better. Thank you for displaying your work, and doing the videos. Have you tried customizing the images, like changing the hair color, or use a different hair style?

Thanks for writing. After I finish my current vector, I will be customizing all of the vectors I work on. I will be just using the image as a reference and changing up things to suit my needs. I don't know how that will work out as of now, but what the hell, I like a good challenge, lol.

wow... the only thing that lets me know this is a vector is the hair other than that it's so amazing :o

Thanks. Yeah, I heard that a lot from the viewers of this vector. That's the reason I strived harder to take that element away and went for a more realistic approach with my later detailed gradient mesh pieces.

Thanks. Vectors are what I do. Those detailed vectors are just close ups on faces, so there are more detail to pick up with the gradient mesh. Check out the videos in the descriptions if you want to see the process on Youtube.

the skin and freckles are amazing! Hair is always difficult (I see you have got it about perfect on your latest 'Look into my eyes...'), the transition between the white and iris of her left eye seems to stand out, I don't know why, perhaps it the very white white? Just very tiny nit picks, as it is such an amazing image... :)

Thanks. I always like when I get critiques that give me something to build on as you have done. The white of the eye was kinda difficult to get right, I meshed it, then I tried to changed the color in a few areas to fix a few mistakes. I think it blended nicely, but I'll take a look at it again. The hair is very hard to nail. Hair within itself is layered and textured and this always proves to cause me trouble when I create my mesh pieces. My hair technique is evolving (so to speak) and I'm pleased with the result. But like with each of my vectors, I always try to move forward with my art.

This is gradient mesh? Definitely didn't know that kind of effect was possible with it. I think the one off thing is that hair going across her right shoulder, but it's so realistic that those kinds of small things stand out more than they normally would.

Yes, it's a gradient mesh. Yeah the effect is possible, it just takes a long time. I was getting that a lot about the hair, so on my next couple women vectors, I aimed to get better producing hair.

Ooh. I wouldn't have thought that was something possible with the mesh tool...I'm definitely reconsidering what I can do with it. Yeah, I saw your hair has gotten pretty amazing, too.

Thanks, creating realistic hair had me pulling out my hair, it was quite frustrating. Many things are possible with the mesh tool. You can decide the level of detail you want to put into it. If you want to get a head start with the mesh tool, you can click on the link in signature below for my Youtube video tutorials. The newer ones might be more helpful to you, good luck.

Oooh. I've only tried it once, learned the hard way that it doesn't work well on shapes with odd angles. Thanks for the link!

My pleasure. Once you've learned how to manipulate the mesh, it can work on odd shapes, you just need to put some time in practicing.

I'll try to get one done with this hair technique. But when I create the hair, I do something differently everytime. I'm trying to get more consistent with it though.

Beautiful. This really looks amazing.
Did you have some kind of reference or something?
The only thing, I would criticise is the skin below her face...it seems pretty blurry.
Nonetheless...beautiful, as I said before^^

Thanks, I'm glad you like it. Yes, I used a reference image of Lady Susan. Are talking about the black mesh area? If you are, I'm just happy it came out looking like mesh, it might have a blurred look, but I meshed it the best I could.
